Full Papers back to menu

Full papers may address any of the areas identified in the conference topics. Full papers must report original work that has not been previously published. The contribution should be made clear in the paper and in its abstract. Papers making one clear, significant contribution are more likely to be accepted than papers making several lesser contributions. The paper must identify and cite published work relevant to the paper topic. It should explain how the presented work has built on previous contributions, and should indicate where and why novel approaches have been adopted. Papers should stress their contribution to concepts and theories in the field of interaction design and children. Papers addressing novel techniques and technologies should clearly identify the relevance and importance to IDC.

IDC2010 will have a Special Award for the Best Paper. The paper will be chosen by a board of the Program Committee and will be notified during the Conference Dinner. The authors will be awarded a Diploma and a 500.00 Euros prize.

The IDC2010 review process will continue with blind reviewing. Papers should be anonymized so that the identity of the authors is not immediately obvious. Thus, authors are expected to remove author and institutional identities from the title and header areas of the paper. Further suppression of identity in the body of the paper is left to the authors' discretion.

We encourage submissions of full papers, which we would expect to be in the neighborhood of eight (8) pages long.  Note that the absolute maximum page length for a long paper is ten (10) pages (due to restrictions on publishing).

The papers should be formatted according to the ACM SIGCHI Publications Format. Before you start writing please download and read the ACM SIGCHI Publication Template that contains information about how your paper should be structured and the appropriate use of language. If English is not your first language, we encourage you to have a fluent English speaker check your work.

Your complete paper must be submitted as a PDF (only) no later than February 1 2010, 5:00 PM (1700) GMT at the EasyChair Submission web site. The submission site will open in December 2010. Submissions arriving after the deadline or with improper formatting or anonymization will not be considered.

Short papers must report original work that has not been previously published. Authors are encouraged to demonstrate work in progress and late-breaking research results that show the latest innovative ideas. We invite presentation of ongoing work and preliminary results, by experienced academics as well as young researchers and designers.

More than Demosback to menu

Demos may address any of the areas identified in the conference topics.

This year demos are "More than Demos" because they will be showcased at a very special venue: "CosmoCaixa" the Science Museum of Barcelona. This belongs to the foundation of a prominent savings bank ("la Caixa").

There will be two sessions for "More than Demos":

  • The first is for IDC2010 attendees on Thursday afternoon, right before the Keynote. Attendees will be transported to the venue to guarantee a good participation.
  • The second is open to the general public that visits the museum on Saturday morning. The museum will guarantee (through their standard advertising channels) a large number of visitors (groups of children, families, etc.). Therefore, the selected demos will obtain the following extra benefits:
    • The event can be considered an official dissemination event for your research. The organisation of IDC2010 and the museum will deliver a certificate to the authors as a proof of their participation in the event.
    • During the event the authors may observe how members of the general public understand and use their demos in an informal manner.
    • Authors may wish to set up formal field trials with the visitors by having them sign consent forms and carrying out interviews, having them fill out questionnaires, and collecting observational data, etc. This may allow the authors to obtain very valuable research data in a short period of time.

Authors are encouraged to submit demos that have either not been previously published, that have not been shown at previous editions of IDC, or that present a clear leap forward from previous versions. Authors are also encouraged to demonstrate work in progress and late-breaking research results that show the latest innovative ideas. We invite presentation of ongoing work and preliminary results, by experienced academics as well as young researchers and designers.

Papers addressing novel techniques and technologies should clearly identify the relevance and importance to IDC.

The IDC2010 review process will continue with blind reviewing. Papers should be anonymized so that the identity of the authors is hidden. Thus, authors are expected to remove author and institutional identities from the title and header areas of the paper. Further suppression of identity in the body of the paper is left to the authors' discretion.

Demo papers may be up to four (4) pages long. The papers should be formatted according to the ACM SIGCHI Publications Format. Before you start writing please download and read the ACM SIGCHI Publication Format. This contains information about how your paper should be structured and the appropriate use of language. If English is not your first language, we encourage you to have a fluent English speaker check your work.

Your complete demo paper must be submitted as a PDF (only) no later than March 15 2010, 5:00 PM (1700) GMT at the EasyChair Submission web site. Submissions arriving after the deadline or with improper formatting or anonymization will not be considered.

The DC is a closed event where only PhD students can participate. Interested students should submit an extended research abstract describing:

  • their research topic,
  • the work so far,
  • the methods used
  • and the planned next steps.

Abstracts will be reviewed and selected on the basis of quality and regarding the benefit students may derive from participating on the DC. Preference will be given to:

  • students who have already worked at least 9 months on their PhD
  • and who have more than 9 months of work left to do.

Candidates should provide a 4 page abstract of their thesis and should be formatted according to the ACM SIGCHI Publications Format; this may be essentially the same content as a paper submission, with the addition of some information on: overall research question for the PhD, research approach, earlier studies done and future studies planned. Complete paper must be submitted as a PDF (only) no later than March 22 2010, 5:00 PM (1700) GMT at the EasyChair Submission web site. Candidates should also have a brief (one-page) recommendation letter from their main thesis advisor sent to the Doctoral Consortium chair , supporting the candidate's application.

Candidates shall be selected on the basis of interest, relevance to IDC and quality of the research presented and especially regarding the benefit that the DC can provide to them.

The format of the DC will consist of presentations and feedback from a panel of experts from the IDC community. Panels will also discuss examples of model PhD thesis and discuss practical advice.
