Welcome to prOmusic

prOmusic (acronym for Processing Music) is the name of a project funded by the Spanish R&D Program (grant number: TIC 2003-07776-C02) which started in January 2004 and will finish by December 2006.

prOmusic's main task is to investigate musical expressive performance using inductive machine learning. Instead of manually modeling expressive performance and testing the model on real musical data, we let a computer use machine learning techniques to automatically discover regularities and performance principles from real performance data.

Our aim is to induce knowledge which explains and predicts, for a significant number of cases, how a particular note in a particular context should be played. Not all the expressive transformations performed by a musician can be predicted at a local note level. Musicians perform music considering a number of abstract structures (e.g. musical phrases) which makes of expressive performance a multi-level phenomenon. In this context, our ultimate aim is to obtain an integrated model of expressive performance which combines note-level information with structure-level information.
